HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER

Application for membership shall be on properly prescribed form and the applicant must be proposed and seconded by an ordinary and paid up member of the Association.

Each application shall be laid before a properly constituted Executive Committee meeting for consideration and admission shall be on the unanimous vote of the committee members present and voting. In the event of there not being a unanimous vote for admission the application shall be deferred to the next executive committee meeting.

No member will be properly admitted and have the rights of membership until he/she has paid his/her application fee and annual subscription (Kshs 2,000).

It is free of charge provided the student is in Nairobi University or other veterinary schools recognized by the KVA.

Every student member is expected upon graduation to write and inform the Honorary Secretary (secretary@kenyavetassociation) of his/her qualification and registration/licensing and upon the payment of the current prescribed fees, and filling of the appropriate application forms the graduant will be promoted to an ordinary member.

A recommendation of honorary membership shall be proposed and seconded by ordinary paid up members in writing to the Honorary Secretary (secretary@kenyavetassociation.com) of the KVA. The Honorary Secretary shall circulate the name(s) of the proposed individual(s) in writing to the entire membership of the KVA for scrutiny – at least three months in advance of the Annual General Meeting.

The branches shall in turn forward their recommendations to the Council of the KVA at least eight weeks prior to an Annual General Meeting of the Association. The Council shall prepare a recommendation and place it on the KVA Annual General Meeting agenda. Admission shall be by a majority vote at a properly constituted general meeting of the Association. Honorary members are exempted from payment of subscription fees.

Prospective corporate members apply in writing to the Honorary Secretary (secretary@kenyavetassociation.com) of KVA. The application is then laid before a properly constituted executive committee meeting for consideration and admission and is subjected to a unanimous vote of the executive committee members present and voting. In the event of there not being a unanimous vote for admission the application may be deferred to the next executive committee meeting on admission.

The Executive Committee of KVA then decides on admission of corporate members. There shall be only two representatives of the corporate member institutions at KVA official functions at any one given time.

RIGHTS OF MEMBERS AND TERMINATION

Ordinary Members

  1. Ordinary members have full voting rights provided they are fully paid up members.
  2. Ordinary members have the right to propose or second any fully paid up members for any office in the association or for a place on the executive committee provided this is done in accordance with the constitution.
  3. Ordinary members have the right to propose, second or object to any licensed or registered veterinary surgeon applying for membership of the Association or any person of the general public for honorary/corporate membership provided this is done in accordance with the constitution.
  4. Ordinary members may propose or second motions for consideration at Annual and Special general meetings provided they are submitted according to the constitution.
  5. Ordinary members may take part in all the activities organized by the Association.

Student members

Student members have no voting rights, and hence shall not propose, second or object to applications for membership. Student members may participate in all other activities of the association, but shall not stand for elective posts. Student members will not be considered for any nominated posts within the KVA.

Honorary members

Honorary members who are not Veterinary Surgeons shall have no voting rights. Honorary members may participate in all other activities of the Association, but those who are not veterinary surgeons shall not stand for elective or nominated posts.

Corporate members

Corporate members have no voting rights. They have no right to propose, second or object to application for ordinary membership or honorary membership, or any office in the association or place in the executive committee. Corporate members may participate in all other activities of the association but shall not stand for elective posts or be nominated to any post.

  • In order to maintain their membership, members are expected to pay their annual subscription by 30th April each year failure to do so resulting in automatic termination of membership.
  • Members whose membership is terminated for non-payment of annual subscriptions will apply for readmission in the normal procedure if they wish to be reinstated.
  • It will be at the discretion of the executive committee to demand full payment of the subscription fees outstanding or part thereof if a member is readmitted.
  • Failure of members to observe rules and regulations of the association may result in termination of membership in accordance with article 8.3 of the constitution.
  • Ordinary members who for any reason are unable to meet their annual subscriptions may apply in writing to the Honorary Treasurer for the waiver of such payments and the suspension of their membership for the period they are unable to do so.
  • While on suspension, ordinary members shall lose all their membership rights e.g. Voting, the journal etc.
  • Members who are subject to disciplinary action by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KBV) or who have been found guilty on criminal charges are automatically suspended from the Association. The lifting of the suspension will only be done after successful application for re-admission, which will be determined by the KVA executive.
  • Members may terminate their membership by a written notice to the Honorary Secretary of the Association.
