Launch of Livestock Identification and Traceability System in Laikipia County

Launch of Livestock Identification and Traceability System in Laikipia County

The Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) has kicked off a  livestock identification and traceability exercise in Laikipia County. The identification system being done in collaboration with KCB Foundation and the director of veterinary services aims to trace individual animals to their owners so as to deter theft, enable their owners to secure loans and insurance from various financial institutions and to access both local and international markets for livestock and livestock products.

Laikipia governor- Mr Alfred Nderitu addresses livestock stakeholders within the county. He promised total commitment ensuring the LITS exercise succeeds and livestock production is modernised.

The association has conducted a series of sensitization meetings in Laikipia areas of Doldol, Ilingwesi, Mugie, Kimanju and Nanyuki areas to ensure mobilisation and acceptance of the system to the local community.

With this system, the association will create a robust database for the livestock population in Kenya using a mobile app as the main data collection tool. With this system, one can gather details of the animal, owner, premises, treatment and vaccination history, movement, and also help the government officers manage quarantines.

A brainstorming session involving major livestock industry players like Kenya meat commission, KVA, commercial banks, insurance firms, and county government.
